Old Town

Alberobello is home to more than 1,500 trulli (plural of Trullo) that have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. Trulli are dry stone hut with conical roof and generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or they could also be permanent dwellings by small proprietors of agricultural laborers. During the 16th century, the local rulers in the region wanted to avoid paying property taxes to the King, which were based on the number of rooftops, so they ordered local peasants to build their houses without mortar so that in the event of a royal inspection they could quickly be dismantled. Using local limestone and these clever building techniques, the residents created the trulli.

We are now headed to the old town.

We are now starting to see lots and lots of Trulli.

It is very unique to walk around and see all these Trulli.

It was hot so Hoa is taking a little break.

Pretty amazing how they were able to stack all the stones to create a roof.

Gorgeous street.

Ngeun and Catherine doing a little bit of shopping.

All the trulli are nicely preserved.
