Day 3-Cefalu -09/26/2017

Cathedral of Cefalu Medieval streets/old port/Beach

The cathedral is in the back

Small alley/street.

This medieval town has maintained its original old look and ambiance and nowadays attracts thousands of tourists every year.

I can imagine how crowded it must be in the summer..We lucked out, we had pretty the whole town to ourselves.

We walked by a small and interesting museum called the Mandralisca. It contains one of Antonello da Messina's most famous painting, the portrait of an unknown man from 1470, a collection of ancient coins, Greek terracotta's, including a vase from the 4th century BC.

The entrance of the Museum.

Ancient Greek terracotta vase on display in the main window

Display from the main window.

Porta Pescara archway makes a nice frame for a wonderfully photogenic shots of Cefalu town's beach

The only surviving city gate of four that were along the old city walls. Porta Pescara is from the name of the viceroy that had the doors built in circa 1570.
Located in the old part of town near the beach and the Old Port. .

This is the old port and old town

Beautiful view...

Nice beach... not many tourists around this time of the year.

Look at all the empty beach chairs...

Straight ahead is the town of Cefalu

The old town

Church of Santa Maria Dell'ltria and San Giovanni

The church was closed when we got there so we could not get in.

Overlooking at the sea the complex was initially formed by two adjacent churches: the church of San Giovanni Evangelista that was probably dated from the 15th century and the church of Santa Maria dell'Oditria short for dell"Itria which was only a chapel dedicated to San Michele the Archangel.  The chapel was donated to the bishop Ottaviono Preconio and then both properties were merged in 1961 into a unique parish called dell'Itria e di San Giovanni.

This is the terrace of the church

Gorgeous view from here.

Check out the Rocca mountain on the back.

This is court yard of the church over looking the sea.

An urn in the middle of the court yard.

An excellent accordion player sitting at the corner of the court yard.

Minh enjoyed his performance and gave him 5 euros.  Needless to stay he was grinning from ear to ear.

Beautiful coastline

Cefalu lighthouse.

We are back at the main beach on the promenade taking a rest and watching the sun set.

Cefalù is notable for beautiful sunsets and we are so glad to be here...

Next...Dinner in Catania
