Kevin and Kristie standing close to the rampart- we are now at the summit.

The Abbey church was erected between 1023 and 1085 at the summit of the rock, on what was the traditional location of sanctuaries placed under the protection of Saint Michel.

The facade of the abbey.  The abbey has to answer the needs of a community that comprised some fifty monks as well as those of the throngs of pilgrims who flocked there to worship the archangel.

View of the island from the summit.

A bird not afraid of people!  he rested comfortably there even there are a lot of people around..

I am not sure of what they are doing but it looks like they are looking for crustaceans...

Inside the church.  The nave is in the background.

The reddish tinge of some of the stones was caused by a fire in 1834, when the abbey served as a prison.

Hoa resting in a really peaceful area!

The nave- so gorgeous!

Ground level of the nave.

We are now leaving the abbey going to Cloister

Next... The Cloister, and more
