The departure

A Dragon boat is a very long and narrow human-powered boat used in the team paddling sport which originated in China over 2000 years ago.

The standard crew is around 22, comprising of 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddlers, and 1 sweep or helmsman at the rear of the boat.   Kevin is one of the paddlers on the boat. The Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival, held once a year at the Marine Stadium is one of the largest dragon boat races in California.  In addition to the main event, there are art demonstrations, dance, music and martial art performances.  The Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival attracts a lot of people and family coming for entertaining and it is a fun place to hang out.

To get to Long Beach the school got a bus to drive the whole crew there.

On the bus... This is a fairly long trip!  It takes about 6 to 8 hours to get to Long Beach from Los Altos!

The kids goofing off!

There must be at least 6 girls on the team to qualify to compete in the Dragon boat race.

Kevin's goal was to be shirtless for the whole trip.  The kids were just laughing...
